Emotions will well up, often without our control or consent. However separating ourselves from them can give us more control of our thoughts. Watch yourself being happy and then perhaps getting angry but do not take these emotions too seriously; this is called witnessing. Do not mistake emotions for thoughts. Ideas and thoughts are important; they serve a useful function. Emotions are your mental response to your thoughts and what’s happening around you. Try to detach yourself from the emotions behind the thoughts and find yourself getting calmer and more grounded.
